And finally,
ORACLE MANUFACTURING
Back in Victoria, I learned the lesson of persistence in finding a desired job, thanks to Dad patiently teaching me that. (Easy to say "patiently" now of course) Somehow I locked my sights on a basic job at this laminated-countertop factory in Esquimalt. I showed up, dressed for work, for weeks, and finally landed a job.
My job was to inhale hazardous glues,
have water-fights, eat on the roof, play with the
forklift, and operate this glue oven.
I happened to 'bump into' my old
foreman,
Helmut Teunissen, on the net recently.
I happened upon a link to his website. Hi Helmut!
A little snippet from the journal, about the following photos, cars, and Mom & Dad. |
After a while here, I somehow germinated a desire to go to the hotel industry. It wasn't long after this when I found excellent employment at the Laurel Point Inn, beginning several new wonderful relationships and what turned out being an accounting career. It was a promising new era, which would soon leave my teen years forever behind.
Thank you Sue. It turned out to be great evening |
The call of the sea. This must be one of my last pictures, before dropping the Pentax (and case with three lenses, forty pictures and my shirt) down a cliff and into the ocean at Pender Island.
It took with it my joy of photography for twenty-some years to follow.
Twenty five years later, at 44, I look into these frozen glimpses of the young man I was. I recall, and I smile, at the fun I had, and at the people I was given to know and to love. I smile at my youth, and at the enormous patience given to me by this universe. I see so many 'better ways' of doing things now, yet this was the life I had and I am thankful for it.
I fondly recall the support and safety I felt within our group of friends. Though we were all different, sometimes it felt like it was us-versus-the-world, and our 'gang' was home. Eventually we all exploded to a variety of places, beliefs and experiences. I think since then we have changed, grown, died, been re-born, departed, learned and returned. Today I'm a happy guy to be re-discovering some of these people, and to be hearing about what they exploded to those many years ago. Yes, you guys, I have changed. Yet the spirit inside of me - the guy who smiles when he looks at these pictures - is the very same guy you hung out with then - he has not changed. I'm here.
Your friend,
Eric
